I am traveling abroad. My doctor prescribed Malarone, but I have heard that it upsets people’s stomachs. I know there are other types of malaria prevention medicine. The most helpful answers would be people who have taken the drug/drugs. Thank you so much!

It is very common these days to find medicines labeled as natural or herbal medicines. In a medical store one can easily find millions of dietary supplements and medicines for various diseases. The history of medicinal plants goes back more than 5000 years ago. The use of these plants as medicines can be studied in the ancient texts of Chinese and Egyptian papyrus. Additionally, Ayurveda and traditional Chinese Herbal medicine text have explained the systematic use of these medicines.

The scientists found that people in various parts of the world use similar plants for same purposes. And, in the 19th century, with advent of chemical analysis, scientists performed the extraction of active ingredients of the plant. They modified the extractions with some other chemicals to give the improved results. In later history, the chemists also began to make their own modifications and herbal medicines; which tended the shift of herbal medicines towards the pharmaceuticals only.

It has been studied by the World Health Organization that 80% of the people rely on herbal medicines in the primary aspects of better health. The increasing dissatisfaction from the prescribed allopathic medicines, observing their side-effects on the body and high cost have made them to turn to natural ways to treat the disease. In this regard, herbal medicines have come as the best alternative to the people. The Chinese herbal medicines are considered to be the best treatment option in the science of herbal plants. In the late twenty century people have realized the benefits of natural products; therefore, the utilization of these medicines has increased significantly. But there is a specific way to use them. In many herbs used in herbal alternative medicines, the active ingredient is not known which actually affects the body.

A single herb contains many ingredients of benefit to the body. A number of factors are involved in improving the quality of the herb and its components. The environment in which the plant is grown has the major effect on the quality of the herb. The soil, climate, bugs, altitude etc are the primary factors that need to be taken care for the healthy growth of the plant. In many of the herbs, the whole plant is not useful. Only one part of the plant is used to correct the problem. Therefore, many herbalists extract the active agents of that plant such as roots, leaves, flower, seeds etc. Every part of the herb has number of components which can not be generated synthetically or pharmaceutically, that’s the only reason the herbalist use the extracts of the medicinal plant.

It is recommended to the customer to take the herbal medicines only after consulting the professional herbalist. Though these herbal medicines do not have any side-effect but it would be better to consult the doctor first. He will also suggest you which medicine would be best suited for you.

Evelyn Lim asked:

Until recently, there has been a battle between proponents of alternative medicine and believers in conventional medicine. It seemed that to back one was to deny the other. This is no longer the case. An increasingly knowledgeable public is aiming for health and wellness, a more general term that recognises that both conventional medicine and alternative medicine have something to offer. These two fields now create a whole new medical approach.

What is conventional medicine?

Conventional medicine is used to describe the services that treat the symptoms of a disease or illness with prescribed medications and surgeries. Conventional medicine treats the ailing part of the body but may not address the underlying causes of the illness or disease. This area of medicine is what is practiced in hospitals and most doctor’s offices in the Western world. Backed by the FDA and multiple scientific studies, conventional medicine is highly regulated for the benefit of the patient.

What is alternative medicine?

An alternative form of treatment to conventional medicine, alternative medicine attempts to treat the patient as a whole - the mind, spirit, and body - to prevent diseases and illnesses from occurring and creating a better overall quality of life rather than just a body free of symptoms. Because it acknowledges that the patient’s physical health is directly affected by state of mind and spiritual health, alternative medicine offers preventative treatments that are often relaxing and non-invasive.

Can conventional medicine co-exist with alternative medicine?

Increasingly, more and more people would like to believe so and are introducing alternative therapies, such as massage therapy and energy balancing, into their daily lives. When sick, these people may still go back to their western allopathic medicine for speedy recovery.

In fact, “integrative medicine” is the term coined for which the scientific and objectivity of conventional medicine is complemented with the subjective, more personal dynamics of alternative medicine. It is a new movement that is driven by consumers, that is, patients who demand

higher standards of health; in short, total wellness. In addition to providing the best conventional care, integrative medicine focuses on preventive lifestyle measures. These lifestyle measures include diet, exercise, stress management, and emotional well-being. However, as it is still evolving, more needs to be investigated into precisely what “integrative medicine” stands for and what it advocates.

In the meantime, for anyone, it is important to understand the principles of each area of medicine. Only then, can one benefit from making a wise choice in terms of one’s health and wellness.
