A family member keeps going through the cycle of getting put in the hospital and forced to take psych meds then coming out and abruptly quitting the meds. Each time they get worse and won’t listen to reason. They refuse to talk to counselors, psychcologists or psychiatrists. We think the meds and/or the repeated abrupt discontinuation may be causing the psychosis or withdrawal symptoms that put them back in the hospital. Most experts agree the only way off the meds is to slowly taper off them over a period of time, but that can’t happen unless they agree to take them in the first place. Even if alternative treatments involving vitamins, etc. are used the meds have to be tapered off to get off them correctly, otherwise you get disastrous side effects. Is there any branch of medicine, knowledge or expertise in getting through to someone suffering from denial, psychosis or withdrawal?
